Clifton Street House
Location: Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country (Richmond)
Category: Residential - Urban
Architects: JCB Architects
Year Completed: 2021
Project Description:
Clifton Street garden is a collaborative project with Jon Clements of JCB Architects, focusing on complimenting the form of the house through a refined material palette and textural planting.
The facade of the house integrates harmoniously with the surrounding garden. The leftover slimline bricks from the house construction were repurposed for the garden ground plane, bleeding out into the north-facing courtyard. The eye is naturally drawn from the inside outward, with fragmenting bricks among the textured plants, softening the house's form. The simplified hardscaping palette brings the plant life into focus, using fine-textured foliage of a mix of Mediterranean edible and Australian native and indigenous plant species, locating the garden in its historical Richmond Hill context, and making the house and garden one.
