Deakin University Central Campus, Waurn Ponds

Location: Wadawurrung Country (Waurn Ponds)

Category: Educational - Tertiary

Architect: Six Degrees Architects

Year Completed: 2011

Project Description:

The project involved a complete upgrade of the central core of the campus. The aim was to de-institutionalise the space by creating multiple spaces on varying scales, providing for a range of uses, and at the same time creating a social place with a collegiate atmosphere.

Raised concrete terraces assist in enhancing a sense of intimacy within the central landscape quadrangle, creating breakout spaces that remain connected to the larger heart of the campus. In time, as the trees and gardens were established, the central campus precinct became a more intimate space with less dominant building facades and more emphasis on the ground plane and surrounding landscape.
