Haileybury Year 9 Courtyard, Brighton

Location: Boonwurrung Country (Brighton)

Category: Educational - Secondary

Architect: Architectus

Year Completed: 2022

Project Description:

A new meeting and breakout space for students nestled into the school’s framework, expanding outdoor learning and recreation opportunities.

The proposal uses raised planters to channel and separate pedestrian flow whilst providing a sense of privacy and separation from the adjoining school yard. The courtyard facilitates movement and accessibility and provides multiple breakout points for outdoor learning and passive recreation. Students can relax on the terraced lawn, wait for friends on the concrete ledge, and enjoy outdoor learning with a variety of outdoor classroom opportunities. The planting caters for use throughout the seasons, with overhead deciduous trees to provide welcoming summer shade and winter sun.
